In order to better serve our community, the Little Saigon Foundation surveyed about 1,000 Vietnamese residents of San Diego in 2013-2014.  In response to the survey, the Little Saigon Community Center is established.

LITTLE SAIGON FOUNDATION HOSTS LUNAR NEW YEAR TT FESTIVAL AT QUALCOMM STADIUM

San Diego, CA – The Little Saigon San Diego Foundation is pleased to announce this year’s Lunar New Year Tết Festival will be held at Qualcomm Stadium for three exciting days. For thousands of years the Lunar New Year has been observed in various countries around the world influenced by Chinese civilization and it remains Vietnam’s most celebrated holiday. 2014 marks the Year of the Horse, an animal representing pace and enthusiasm that many believe signals a year of rapid development and prosperity.

About the Festival

The Lunar New Year Tết Festival is expected to attract 20,000 – 25,000 people.  Besides from a fusion of Asian food, vendor booths, non-stop live entertainment, 3 New Year’s Eve Concert featuring top performers from Asia Entertainment Inc., Miss Traditional Dress Beauty Pageant, 3 competing Lion Dance teams performing throughout the day, the event also features breath-taking displays of Cultural Village and iconic structures from South East Asia (see photos attached).  Furthermore, the Tet Festial at Qualcomm is also one of the only events in the county besides the San Diego County Fair that offeris carnival rides appropriate for all ages.

Join us for Super Bowl Sunday and enjoy $5 beers all day long while you watch the game on several big screen televisions. Free admission will be offered from 10AM to 12PM each day for guests wearing traditional Lunar New Year costumes or military uniforms.

Besides from its entertainmen values, this event’s goals include:

  1. Enhance San Diego’s marketability as a cultural tourist destination
  2. Create economic opportunities for small businesses an enterprising individuals
  3. Create opportunities for community organizations and government agencies to reach out to the public
  4. Raise fund to revitalize the newly designated Little Saigon San Diego Cultural and Commercial District in City Heights.  Funds will go to improve infrastructure, create social services for the under-served, and empower under-represented community members to participate in civic responsibilities.

The Little Saigon Foundation’s Lunar New Year Festival began humbly in the community of City Heights in 2010.  Since then, each subsequent year, the Festival has outgrown its venue and the event found itself in Kearny Mesa in 2012 and 2013.  It has now grown to embrace part of Qualcomm Stadium in 2014.

The Lunar New Year Tết Festival will be open Friday, January 31, 5PM-11PM, Saturday, February 1, 10AM-11PM and Sunday, February 2, 10AM-10PM. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for children.

Little Saigon San Diego Foundation is seeking one high-caliber individual to coordinate a Community Needs-assessment Survey.  The survey will gather input from community members in order to facilitate the creation of appropriate services “designed by the community for the community”

 

Position: Community Organizer

Term: October – March, 2014 (projects may extend beyond this term)

 

Pay: $2,500 to $5,000 per contract depending on experience.

 

(This is an independent contract job.  There is no employer/employee relation.  Contractor is expected to meet goals as agreed upon at the onset of the project )

 Qualifications    
 

  • *Fluent in in English/Vietnamese: Read/Write/Speak (*please do not apply if you do not have this language requirement. Thank you)
  • Leadership Experience in Community or Student Organizations.
  • Able to recruit, manage volunteers
  • Great writing and verbal communication skills
  • Team Player
  • Outgoing, adventurous, willing to dive into new experiences
  • Goal-oriented and result-driven
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Flexible hours including nights and weekends
  • Public speaking Experience.

Ideal candidate should have background in social sciences, social justice, political-sciences, ethnic studies, etc.

 

 Duties
 Duties includes but are not limited to:

 

  • Coordinate a Community Survey to address the needs of the Vietnamese community with emphasis on Mid-city residents, Businesses, Youths
    • Face to face interaction with survey participants
    • Recruit and Manage volunteers
    • Outreach and recruit community members to meetings
    • Coordinate and facilitate Community Meetings
    • Present at community meetings
